What is 5-axis Simultaneous Machining?

Simultaneous 5-axis CNC machining

Comparing with four-axis CNC machining, one more additional rotation axis is added on the five-axis CNC machining. The fifth axis will rotate around the Y axis, which is also known as the B axis. The work piece can also be rotated on some machines. Sometimes they were called B-axis or C-axis.

Five Axis Machining is one of CNC machining modes, which will use linear interpolation of any 5 coordinates of X, Y, Z, A, B, and C. Usually, the machine used for 5-axis processing is called five-axis machine, or five-axis machining center.

Simultaneous five-axis or five-axis Linkage means that there are at least five coordinate axes on a machine, and there are three linear coordinates and two rotation coordinates among them. Moreover, these coordinates can be coordinated and processed simultaneously under the control of a computer numerical control (CNC) system.

Simultaneous 5-Axis Machining

Five-axis linkage is a term of CNC. Linkage means that the axes of the CNC machine could reach a certain set point at a certain speed at the same time. Five-axis linkage means that all five axes could reach a certain set point at a certain speed at the same time.

At present, there are two types of five-axis machines. One is five-axis linkage machining, which all five axes can be linked at the same time. The other one is five-axis positioning machining, which is still five-axis but three axes linked. In this mode, the two rotating shafts will be used for rotating and locating, and the rest 3 shafts could machining simultaneously. This kind of five-axis machine is known as 3+2 mode, which can also be understood as a positional five-axis machine.

The difference between true and positional 5-axis is whether there is RTCP function. RTCP is the abbreviation of Rotational Tool Center Point.

True 5-axis Machining Center

Simultaneous 5-Axis Machining

The true 5-axis machine has RTCP. The positional 5-axis has not.

Five-axis machine and CNC systems will need CAM programming and post-processing to set the tool trace in adance, if they have no RTCP. For the same part, if the machine tool is changed or the tool is changed, CAM programming and post-processing must be performed again. Therefore, it can only be called a positional five axis.

3+2 Machining Center or Positional 5 axis Machining Center

Simultaneous 5-Axis Machining

In short, the true five-axis is five-axis and five linkage. The positional five-axis may be five-axis and three-linkage, and the other two axes will play a positioning function!

Considering the cost and technology of the 5-axis machine, Kesu Group invested in both true and positional five-axis machines. Currently, Kesu Group has 10 true five-axis machine centers and 10 positional five-axis machine centers.

The five-axis linkage CNC machine is a machine with high technology and high precision, which is specially used for processing complex curved surfaces. This machine tool system is widely used in aviation, aerospace, military, scientific research, precision equipment, high-precision medical equipment and other industries.

Simultaneous 5-Axis Machining

Due to the high versatility of 5-axis CNC machining, it is used to manufacture complex precision parts. Such as artificial prostheses or bone medical parts, aerospace parts, titanium parts, oil and gas mechanical parts, military products, etc.

Simultaneous 5-Axis Machining

At Kesu Hardware, we focus on 5-axis machining services for complex  and high precision parts. Such as engine parts for automotive, impeller for rocket, areoplane, boat and cars etc.

We're ready to take on jobs of any size, from a single part to one thousand parts, for 5-axis CNC machining.
