Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) Coating

Diamond-Like Carbon, commonly referred to as DLC, is a family of carbon-based coatings that has extreme hardness due to the diamond crystal (tetragonal) structure and is soft and lubricious due to the graphite crystal (hexagonal) structure. DLC is amorphous in nature (does not have a crystal structure.

ADVANTAGES OF COOPERATION

What is a Diamond-Like-Carbon (DLC) Coating?

DLC coatings offer a unique combination of high hardness and low friction coefficient → ‘the hardness of diamond and the lubricity of graphite’.

We are thus able to engineer DLC coatings to make them harder like diamond or softer like graphite – according to the requirements that a specific application demands.

Furthermore, DLC coatings can be doped to include metallic elements and can include multi-layered structures that further enhance the performance and flexibility of such coatings.

Diamond-Like Carbon (ALC) Coating

Diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings are nowadays prevalent in many industries and has been one of the most significant developments in the PVD field. It is well-suited to the most extreme wear conditions and high sliding speeds even without lubrication. They minimize frictional losses which makes them ideal for various engine components and in many other applications, ranging from pumps and compressors to bearing shells and rollers, and from textile machines to medical technology.

Different types of DLC coatings are available from the low hardness version (2000 – 3000 Hv) to the high hardness version (5000 – 9000 Hv). In comparison, diamond is 10 000 Hv.

What are the properties of diamond like carbon?

DLC is a metastable form of amorphous carbon containing a significant fraction of sp3 bonds. It can have a high mechanical hardness, chemical inertness, optical transparency, and low friction. In DLC, carbon is able to exist in three hybridizations, sp3, sp2, and sp1, as shown in Figure 1.

What are the benefits of diamond-like carbon coating?

Benefits include wear and abrasion resistance, low Friction, high hardness, antireflective properties, corrosion resistance, gas barrier effect.
