However, there are also some normal problems in POM  turning. For example, the thermal resistance of POM material is not good, as considerable heat will be generated when turning. Although cutting fluid offered some help, the wear of tool is still obvious. The high-speed steel machine tool is fine, if it’s normal POM material. But some of POM material are added with special material, like fiberglass and PTFE. Because these POM components might be used for the bearing bushing of automotive transmission shaft, or bearing bushing of universal joint.

What is POM?

POM (Polyoxymethylene, or Polyformaldehyde) is one kind of linear polymer which has high density, high crystallization, and no side line. According to the different chemical structures in its molecular chain, POM can be divided into two types: homo-polyoxymethylene and co-polyoxymethylene. The significant difference between these two types of POM is listed as below.

Homo-polyoxymethylene has high density, high crystallinity, and high melting point, but has poor thermal stability, a narrow processing temperature range (about 10°C ) and a slightly lower acid-base stability. This kind of POM material can be processed by injection molding, extrusion molding and blow molding.  This kind of POM components are mainly used as gears, cams, bearings, bushings, gaskets, valves, liquid delivery pipes, handles, zippers, anti-corrosion containers, etc. They are widely used in automobiles, machinery, instrumentation, agricultural machinery, chemical industry, construction and household goods, etc.

Co-polyoxymethylene has low density, low crystallinity and low melting point, but it has also the good thermal stability, a wide processing temperature range(about 50 °C), good acid-base stability, and it is not easy to decompose.

POM is an engineering plastic with excellent comprehensive properties. Which has good physical properties, good mechanical properties and good chemical properties, especially excellent friction resistance. POM is also the third largest general used engineering plastic. This kind of POM components are mainly used in electrical appliances, electrical, machinery, automobile and transportation machinery, precision machinery, building materials and many other fields.

Is POM suit for Turning?

Of course, POM is suitable for turning, and the precision could be as high as 0.015mm. POM component need be machined precisely by control the feed and improve the speed of machining tool.
